Text Box: The Sixteenth Annual North Carolina Open Gold Panning Competition will be held at Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site on Saturday, September 17, 2005. The competition is designed to test a participant’s skill at speed panning and is open to the public. All participants are welcome! Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each division. Schedule of the Day Registration 9:00 a.m.–11:45 a.m. Practice 10:00 a.m.–11:45 a.m. Competition 12:00 p.m. Text Box: Rules for Competition COMPETITION—Panning will take place one contestant at a time. Competing order will be determined by random drawing with defending champion panning last. PANS—All contestants will use the same type of pan—14-inch Garrett Gravity Trap Plastic Pans provided by Reed Gold Mine and Garrett Electronics. NUGGETS—Four pea-sized lead nuggets will be placed on top of each sand-filled pan and pushed down to the first knuckle of the judge’s index finger. PANNING—Panning will be done in barrels filled with well water. Each contestant must remove all sand leaving the four “nuggets.” A clean pan is one that has less sand than will cover one bb pellet. TIMING—Timing begins when the contestant touches the pan and ends when he/she says “gold.” Three timers will be used and the median time will serve as the official time for competition. Ten seconds will be added to the score for each nugget lost. JUDGING—Three judges will inspect contestant’s pans to make sure that the pan is clean and to count the nuggets remaining. The decision of the judges is final.
